POETRY
by Vega Buchbinder
I love you
as a candle loves to shine over its limited field;
its rays reach for darkness to rope unto itself
for love and destruction.
careful
as you breathe
and run your finger through
'not to put it out
or I shall wander in darkness looking for another light.
if you do not want it
feed it some fuel
and pass it on.
Marge,
your hair brown and long for your age, freckled shoulders slumped soft breasts flattened with childrearing, you slip into the curves of the sofa and seem to cushion it,
yet your presence levers open the gates of ourselves.
You fill us with your silence gentle interest
as each of us laughs and plays in joyful acceptance.
You pass the joint unnoticed
though you've smoked a thousand times and participated in our stumbled reveries.
We've taken from you
given company and affection borrowed your money
fixed your air conditioner.
Yet who among us can touch you know your sorrows
share your experiences
Who can be your lover,
when we're all sisters and brothers?

"Take Back the Night"
we don't need another love poem
my hands would rather lift your shirt
to find their home
than push a pencil across barren paper without warmth or interesting places to stop
lifting your tee shirt now
there's only air swirling and tumbling forming words
which slide down your legs
and take their place on paper
